The W!LD VETS programme is specifically designed for those who are either studying or working in the veterinary sciences field. This programme provides you with the opportunity to gain practical experience in this field, under the supervision of a professional wildlife vet.
Food, accommodation, ground transport and activities are all included in this package. Please note: Due to the unpredictability of nature, the days stated below may be switched around to give you the best experience possible.
VETERINARY SCIENCES 2 WEEK COURSE OUTLINE

Day 1
ARRIVAL & KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
You arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. We will meet you there and take you to the world-famous Kruger National Park! You will also be given an orientation introducing you to your upcoming wildlife veterinary journey. Settle into your lodge and enjoy your first African sunset!

Days 2 and 3
KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Today and tomorrow, you will meet the vets and attend lectures on current topics: Wildlife disease control and epidemiology, Conservation challenges and strategies, Wildlife-livestock conflict management. The rest of the time will be yours to relax, and our guide will take you on game drives in the park to try and find you the BIG 5!

Day 4
WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTRE
Today you will visit a leading wildlife rehabilitation and breeding centre: Learn about the rescue, rehabilitation, and release process, discover how these centres contribute to biodiversity conservation, and gain behind-the-scenes insight into the daily operations of the facility.

Days 5 and 6
AVIAN & SMALL MAMMAL COURSE
Join a specialised wildlife vet for two days of lectures and practical sessions covering: Avian and small mammal husbandry and care, handling and safety techniques, health assessments, preventative medicine & common diseases, anaesthesia, minor surgery, and medical techniques, as well as participating in practicals supervised by the wildlife vet. Receive a certificate of completion for both courses!

Day 7, 8 and 12
WILDLIFE VET ASSISTANCE AND GAME CAPTURE
Work alongside wildlife vets and game capture specialists (subject to bookings and animal availability): Observe and assist in wildlife immobilisation procedures, learn about tranquilisation techniques and drug protocols, participate in data collection and monitoring during veterinary procedures, and gain exposure to real-world wildlife veterinary challenges.

Day 9
COMMUNITY VETERINARY CLINIC (CVC)
Spend the morning with a Community Vet Clinic team: Assist the vets providing primary animal healthcare in rural, underprivileged communities. The Saturday afternoon is yours to relax at the lodge, have a snooze or a swim, and recharge for the week ahead!

Day 10
ADVANCED VETERINARY REPTILE COURSE
Dive into reptile medicine with a specialised veterinary workshop covering: Reptile husbandry, handling, and restraint, preventative healthcare and disease management, first aid, anaesthesia, and surgical techniques, reptile emergencies, and necropsies. Learn directly from experienced reptile vets! Receive a certificate of completion for the courses.

Day 11
K9 ANTI-POACHING UNIT, DART GUN TRAINING & HELICOPTER EXPERIENCE
Spend the morning with a K9 anti-poaching unit: Learn how the dogs track poachers, detect wildlife products, and understand the working dogs, and attend a darting practical. Learn how to prepare and load tranquilizer darts and practice darting techniques using a dart gun. Experience a helicopter flip while learning about aerial game capture (weather & availability permitting).

Day 12
WILDLIFE VET ASSISTANCE (As mentioned above)
Day 13
ROAD TRIP!
Most of today will be spent driving back to Pretoria. After today you will have one more day left! Enjoy the drive through the beautiful countryside!

Day 14 (Morning)
WILDLIFE VETERINARY HOSPITAL
Today you will visit a wildlife veterinary hospital and learn about the treatment of injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife, understand the rehabilitation process, and the goal of release back into the wild. You will gain insight into specialist wildlife veterinary care.

Day 14 (Afternoon)
DEPARTURE
Today is also a sad day as we have to say goodbye. We will take you to Johannesburg international airport (O.R Tambo) where you will make your way back home. We are sure this experience will never be forgotten and will benefit you throughout your career!
